I know that feeling well. For years I felt like I was drowning in my own bad habits. I was stuck in a cycle of gaming addiction binge eating and laziness. I smoked and drank too much. I felt weak and completely out of control. Change felt impossible. But resilience isn’t about being so strong that the waves never knock you down. It’s about learning how to get back up every single time. It’s a skill you can build one small action at a time.

I learned to get back up. I’m still learning every day. But through this journey I’ve found a strength I never knew I had. Here are 10 ways that helped me build that strength.

Start with a dose of reality

The first step is often the hardest. You have to accept where you are right now without judgment. For me that meant looking in the mirror and admitting I was over 110 pounds overweight and deeply unhappy. Fighting reality is exhausting. Accepting it gives you a solid foundation to start building from. You can’t fix a problem until you admit it exists.

Find your deeper purpose

You need a strong reason to keep going when things get tough. A surface-level goal like "losing weight" wasn't enough for me. My real purpose came from strengthening my Christian Orthodox faith. I realized my body was a gift from God and I was not treating it with respect. My purpose became about honoring God by taking care of His creation myself. This deep why gave me the strength to handle the difficult how. When your purpose is bigger than your comfort you can endure almost anything.

Lean on your people

You were not made to do this alone. Resilience is not a solo sport. Find your people and let them in. This could be close friends family or your community at church. When I felt weak I would call a friend who knew my struggles. I would talk to my spiritual father. Sharing the burden makes it lighter. Hiding it in the dark only makes it heavier. Be brave enough to be vulnerable with the right people.

Take care of the vessel

It’s hard to be mentally tough when you feel physically weak. My journey to losing over 50 kilograms was about more than just looks. It was about reclaiming my energy and my health. When I started eating real food and moving my body everything changed. My mind became clearer. My mood stabilized. You don’t have to run a marathon. Just start with a walk. Swap one soda for water. Small physical changes create huge mental shifts. Honor the body God gave you. It’s the only one you have.

Focus on your small circle of control

So much in life is outside of our control. The weather other people’s opinions traffic. Wasting energy on these things will drain you. Instead focus intensely on what you can control. Your attitude. Your actions. Your responses. I couldn’t control my craving for junk food but I could control whether or not I walked to the kitchen. I couldn’t control my urge to play video games for hours but I could control turning the console off after one hour. Find your small circle of control and own it completely.

Celebrate every small victory

Change doesn’t happen overnight. When I started my weight loss journey the end goal felt a million miles away. So I focused on winning the day. Did I eat a healthy breakfast? That’s a win. Did I go for a walk instead of sitting on the couch? That’s a win. I would literally thank God for these small wins. Each small victory builds momentum. It proves to yourself that you can do it. String enough of these small wins together and you’ll look back and see you’ve built a mountain.

You will fall. You will make mistakes. You will have bad days. The key is not to let a setback become a surrender. I had days where I ate a whole pizza. In the past that would have sent me into a spiral of shame and I would have given up completely. Now I see it differently. I wake up the next day and get right back on track. A setback is just data. It’s a lesson on what to do differently next time. It is not a reflection of your worth.

Practice daily gratitude

This simple practice changed everything for me. Every single night before I sleep I thank God for at least three things that happened that day. Even on the worst days I can find something. A good cup of coffee. A kind word from a stranger. The sun shining. Gratitude forces you to shift your perspective from what’s wrong with your life to what’s right. It pulls you out of a negative mindset and anchors you in the present blessings you already have.

Build a simple routine

When your inner world feels chaotic a solid routine is your best friend. It provides stability and structure. It also saves you from decision fatigue. I don’t work 8 hours a day. I work in short focused bursts of 2-4 hours. That’s my routine. I know when I’m working and when I’m resting. I have a routine for my mornings and my evenings. It’s not rigid or complicated but it’s consistent. This consistency builds discipline and discipline is a cornerstone of resilience.

Look outward and serve

When you are trapped in your own problems the world can feel very small. One of the quickest ways to break out of that is to help someone else. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. Offer to help a neighbor with their groceries. Call a friend who is having a tough time. Volunteer for an hour at your church. Focusing on someone else’s needs provides instant perspective. It reminds you that you have strength to give and that your problems are just one part of a much bigger world.

Building resilience is a lifelong journey not a destination. It’s about choosing strength over and over again in the small moments of everyday life. It’s about learning to bend without breaking and getting back up with more wisdom than you had before.

So let me ask you what’s one small step you can take today? Don’t try to do all ten things at once. Just pick one. Maybe it’s a five-minute walk or writing down three things you’re grateful for.

Your journey starts there.
