15 Moving Day Hacks to Save Time

There are few words that fill me with more dread than “moving day.”

I’ve been there. Staring at a lifetime of stuff crammed into closets and drawers. The sheer scale of it all feels paralyzing. It’s a physical and mental marathon that can leave you feeling drained and defeated before you’ve even taped up the first box. It reminds me of how I felt years ago when I looked in the mirror, over 110 pounds overweight and stuck in a cycle of unhealthy habits. The goal of a healthy life seemed just as impossible as an empty, clean apartment.

But just like I learned to reclaim my health one small choice at a time, I learned to conquer the chaos of moving. It’s not about having superhuman strength or endless energy. It’s about having a smart plan. It’s about turning a mountain of a task into a series of small, manageable steps. Here are 15 moving day hacks that will save your time your sanity and your back.

Prepare for Success

The battle is won before it even begins. A little prep work goes a long way and prevents major headaches down the road.

  1. Declutter Ruthlessly. Before you pack a single thing ask yourself if you really need it. Every item you get rid of is one less thing to pack move and unpack. Be honest with yourself. If you haven’t used it in a year you probably won’t use it in your new home. Sell it donate it or toss it.

  2. Gather Your Supplies First. Don’t get stuck making last-minute runs to the store. Get more boxes tape and packing paper than you think you’ll need. You can always return what you don’t use. Grab a few permanent markers for labeling.

  3. Create a Moving Binder. Keep all your important documents in one place. This includes your moving company contract lease agreements utility company numbers and any receipts. A simple folder or binder will do. This is your command center.

  4. Change Your Address Early. About two weeks before your move contact the post office and your bank and update your address for any subscriptions or online accounts. This ensures you don’t miss important mail during the transition.

The Smart Packing Method

This is where the real work happens. But working smart is better than working hard. The key is to break it down. When I was building a new productive routine I learned that I work best in short focused bursts. I applied the same logic to packing. I’d set a timer for 45 minutes and pack one area with total focus. Then I’d take a 15-minute break. This stopped me from burning out.

  1. Pack a "First Night" Box. This is a lifesaver. Pack a clear plastic bin with everything you’ll need for your first 24 hours in the new place. Think toiletries a change of clothes basic tools a roll of toilet paper coffee and a coffee maker. Keep this box with you not on the moving truck.

  2. Use Color-Coded Labels. Assign a different color for each room. Put a colored sticker or use a colored marker on every box. Then put a matching sticker on the door of each room in your new home. Movers can see at a glance where each box goes without you directing every step.

  3. Label Boxes on the Sides Not the Top. When boxes are stacked you won’t be able to see the top. Label the sides with the room and a brief summary of the contents. For example: KITCHEN – Pots and Pans.

  4. Take Pictures of Electronics. Before you unplug your TV or computer setup snap a quick photo of the back. This will create a simple visual guide for how to reconnect everything later. No more guessing which cord goes where.

  5. Use Your Linens for Padding. Don't waste money on packing peanuts. Wrap breakable items in your towels blankets and even socks. It’s free padding and you have to pack them anyway.

  6. Keep Clothes on Hangers. This is my favorite hack. Take a large trash bag and pull it up over a bundle of hanging clothes. Poke the hanger hooks through the top and tie the drawstring at the bottom. To unpack just hang them up and rip the bag off.

  7. Use Small Boxes for Heavy Items. It’s tempting to put all your books in one giant box. Don't do it. Use small boxes for heavy things like books and dishes to make them easier to carry and less likely to break.

Moving Day Survival

The big day is here. Your goal is to keep things moving smoothly and maintain your peace of mind.

  1. Set Up a "No-Pack Zone." Designate a corner or a small bathroom for items that should NOT be loaded onto the truck. This is where you’ll keep your first-night box your moving binder snacks and your phone charger.

  2. Clean Before You Move In. If at all possible deep clean your new place before moving day. Or at least clean the bathrooms and kitchen. Unpacking into a clean space is a much more pleasant and motivating experience.

  3. Have Water and Snacks Ready. Moving is a workout. Keep a cooler with bottled water and easy-to-eat snacks on hand for you and anyone helping you. Staying hydrated and fueled prevents you from getting tired and cranky.

  4. Celebrate the Small Wins. When you finish packing a room take a moment to acknowledge it. When the last box is on the truck breathe a sigh of relief. Moving is a huge accomplishment. Recognizing your progress helps you stay positive.

Moving is more than just a change of address. It’s a fresh start. It’s a new chapter waiting to be written. For me this journey has been guided by my faith. Trusting that God has a plan for this new season of my life brings a deep sense of peace even when surrounded by boxes and chaos.

So take a deep breath. You can do this.

What’s the one small step you can take today to prepare for your next big move whether it’s to a new home or a new chapter in your life?
