I used to live my life on autopilot. Seriously. My days were a blur of video games, binge eating, and avoiding any real responsibility. I felt stuck and disconnected from the person I wanted to be but had no idea how to even start changing.
The truth is you can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. For me the first step wasn’t some huge, dramatic life overhaul. It was the quiet, gradual process of getting to know myself again. It was about building self-awareness. This isn’t a mystical or complicated idea. It just means paying attention to your own life on purpose. It’s about understanding why you do what you do.
That process changed everything for me. It helped me break habits that were destroying my health and my spirit. It gave me the clarity to lose over 110 pounds and find a lifestyle that actually feels good. And most importantly it deepened my relationship with God giving my life a purpose I never thought possible.
If you feel lost or disconnected I get it. I’ve been there. Here are 15 practical steps that helped me find my way back.
Get to Know Yourself Again
1. Keep a Simple Journal
You don’t need to write pages and pages. Just start small. At the end of the day write down one thing that went well and one thing that was a struggle. What did you do? How did you feel? Writing it down makes it real and helps you see patterns you’d otherwise miss.
2. Ask "Why" Three Times
When you feel a strong urge or emotion ask yourself why. Maybe you want to snack. Why? Because you're bored. Why are you bored? Because you're avoiding a task. Why are you avoiding it? This simple exercise can uncover the real root of your actions in under a minute.
3. Identify Your Triggers
A trigger is anything that sets off an automatic habit. For years my main trigger for gaming was boredom. Stress was a trigger for overeating. By simply identifying these triggers I could prepare for them. When I felt bored I knew I needed a better plan than turning on the computer.
4. Track Your Time for One Week
This can be a real eye-opener. For one week just jot down how you spend your time. No judgment just data. You might be shocked to see where your hours actually go. It will show you the gap between the life you want and the life you’re living.
5. Talk to Someone You Trust
Self-awareness isn’t a solo mission. Talk to a close friend a family member or a spiritual father. Ask them for their honest perspective. They see you from the outside and can often point out blind spots you can’t see on your own.
6. Name Your Emotions
Instead of just feeling "bad" or "off" try to be more specific. Are you feeling anxious? Disappointed? Lonely? Frustrated? Giving a name to the feeling takes away some of its power and gives you a clearer problem to solve.
7. Review Your Day Before Sleep
Take just two minutes before you go to bed. Think about your day. Where did you feel strong? Where did you feel weak? When did you feel close to God? When did you feel far away? This simple review builds self-knowledge one day at a time.
8. Spend Time in Silence
Our world is noisy. Find a few minutes each day to just be quiet. Turn off the music the podcasts and the TV. Let your own thoughts come to the surface. This isn’t about emptying your mind. It’s about giving yourself the space to actually hear yourself think and pray.
9. Connect with Nature
Go for a walk. Sit in a park. Pay attention to God’s creation. There is something about being in nature that calms the spirit and puts our own small problems into perspective. It reminds us of a world beyond our own worries.
10. Define Your Core Values
What is most important to you in life? For me it came down to my faith family and health. When you know your core values you have a compass. You can ask yourself "Does this action align with my values?" If the answer is no it’s easier to choose a different path.
11. Listen to Your Body
My journey of losing over 110 pounds started when I finally began listening to my body. Am I actually hungry or am I just eating because I’m stressed or bored? Do I feel energized after eating this food or sluggish? Your body sends you signals all the time. We just have to learn to listen.
12. Practice Daily Gratitude
This is so simple but so powerful. Every day find three things you are genuinely thankful for. It can be as small as a good cup of coffee or the sun shining. Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s wrong in your life to what’s right. It opens your heart to God’s blessings which are always there.
13. Read Something Meaningful
Feed your mind with more than just social media and news headlines. Read the lives of the Saints. Read the Scriptures. Read books that challenge you and make you think. What you put into your mind shapes who you become.
14. Celebrate Your Small Victories
When I was losing weight I didn’t wait until I lost 100 pounds to feel good. I celebrated the first five. I celebrated choosing a healthy meal. Small wins build momentum. They prove to yourself that you can change. Acknowledge your progress no matter how small.
15. Pray Simply and Honestly
Ultimately my foundation for self-awareness is my relationship with God. Prayer isn’t about using fancy words. It’s about having an honest conversation with our Creator. Tell Him what you’re struggling with. Thank Him for your blessings. Ask for His guidance. In prayer we see ourselves most clearly through the eyes of the One who made us.
Building self-awareness is a journey not a destination. It’s a daily practice of paying attention. You won’t be perfect at it and that’s okay. The goal is progress not perfection.
So let me ask you: What is one small thing you can pay closer attention to today? Your answer could be the start of a whole new chapter.
