On February 5, 2025, at approximately 2:41 p.m., the West Long Branch Police Department received a distress call reporting that an 11-year-old boy had fallen through the ice at Franklin Lake. Patrolman Dave Brosonski, the first officer to arrive on the scene, found the child stranded in the middle of the lake. Without hesitation, Ptl. Brosonski entered the frigid waters and successfully rescued the boy.

The incident occurred when the young boy ventured onto the frozen lake, which had been covered by about three inches of ice. Recent warmer temperatures had caused some of the ice to melt, creating hazardous conditions. As the boy wandered approximately 75 yards across the lake, the ice suddenly gave way, plunging him into four feet of cold water. Panicked and unable to feel his extremities, the boy cried out for help.
Upon arrival, Ptl. Brosonski, who is highly trained in water rescue operations, observed the boy in distress. Recognizing the immediate danger, he entered the icy waters, breaking through the ice with his knees to reach the child.
He reassured the boy, stating, “I’m on my way, everything’s gonna be all right.” After successfully pulling the boy to safety, he was examined by first responders and transported to a local hospital. Fortunately, the boy is expected to make a full recovery.

The West Long Branch Police Department expressed deep gratitude for Officer Brosonski’s swift and heroic actions. Chief Marlowe Botti commended Brosonski’s quick response, stating, “His bravery and quick thinking saved a life today.”
Officer Brosonski, however, modestly dismissed being called a hero, stating, “I feel it was my job. I would’ve gone in no matter what, for anyone, whether I was working or not. I’m just happy that I was the one there.”

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers associated with venturing onto frozen bodies of water, especially during fluctuating temperatures. The West Long Branch Police Department urges residents to exercise caution and avoid walking on ice-covered lakes and ponds.
The department also extended its appreciation to the community members who promptly alerted authorities, enabling a swift response. Additionally, the West Long Branch Emergency Medical Services and the West Long Branch Fire Department were recognized for their prompt and professional assistance during the rescue operation.
